Description | United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is a national network of high school, college, and university students using their power on campus to support workers organizing for their rights. Founded in 1997, USAS began as a loose network of a dozen schools and has grown into a fully staffed organization with student contacts on 400 schools in the United States and Canada. We have had tremendous success throughout our short history – not only bringing the issue of sweatshop labor to the forefront of campus dialogue and forcing our colleges and universities to take responsibility for their profitable participation a garment industry rife with worker exploitation; but we have also helped create real change in workers lives -- helping workers form independent unions, negotiate collective bargaining agreements, and win improvements in wages and working conditions. USAS recognizes that the garment industry is not the only industry through which our educational institutions are involved in worker exploitation. We define the term sweatshop broadly and run campaigns in solidarity with campus workers and workers in other industries in which our schools do business, such as agriculture and beverages. |
