Project overview | The Consumer’s Choice Council (www.consumerscouncil.org) is organizing a symposium entitled "Corn at the Nexus of Debates over Trade, Hunger, Biotechnology, and Agricultural Subsidies" during the World Trade Organization ministerial meeting in Cancun, Mexico. The symposium will be convened on Thursday, September 11, 2003, between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Hotel (Grand Coral 3 room). Representatives from the U.S., Mexico, Canada, South Africa, and China have been invited to participate as discussants. Discussants have been asked to speak about the importance of corn to their respective countries, as well as some of the challenges posed to farmers, export markets, food security, and biodiversity by the advent of genetically engineered and subsidized corn. The purpose of the symposium is to shed light on these issues for WTO delegates and the press. The symposium is open to all; however, the venue is located within the secure area of the WTO’s ministerial meeting, where WTO accreditation will be required to gain access to the hotel. |
