LocationOakland, CA and Cancun, Mexico
Start dateFriday, August 1, 2025
End dateTuesday, September 30, 2024
Project overviewThe WTO's push for market liberalization, increased privatization and towards export-oriented production, has forced intensified cross-border migration as people seek more sustainable livelihoods. Since migrants are highly susceptible to the lack of protection, rights and benefits, multinational corporations and other labor-intensive industries have greatly exploited migrant labor. At the same time, these WTO policies and developing agreements directly contradict the UN Migrant Rights Convention which seeks to foster respect of migrants' human and labor rights. Since it is widely acknowledged that the Cancun ministerial meeting will have fundamental consequences on such social and economic justice, democracy, human and labor rights, the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) is seeking to actively participate in the meetings and surrounding activities. Alongside our partner Migrant Rights International (MRI) and MRI-affiliates from around the world, we seek to: enhance our understanding of WTO principles, policies and outcomes; exert political influence on current negotiations within a migrant rights framework; and explore potential alliance building collaborations with other grassroots organizations and movements. It is expected that our participation will protect and enhance migrant rights which will otherwise be compromised in the proceeding negotiations.
