Name | Creating Corporate Accountability in the Amazon—Ensuring a Full Cleanup of Oil Damages in Ecuador by ChevronTexaco |
Organization | Amazon Watch |
Location | San Francisco & Ecuador |
Start date | |
Project overview | This project’s goal is to force US-based ChevronTexaco to fully remediate the extensive rainforest area it polluted in the Ecuadorian Amazon from 1964 to 1991. Our work has two fronts of action—building the capacity of local grassroots organizations to advocate for their environment to be restored and to mobilize key actors in the US (religious leaders in the company’s hometown, celebrities, and large investors) to leverage pressure on the company to clean the polluted region. This project is coordinated with the lawsuit in Ecuador demanding the company clean up. This case will set critical precedents for corporate accountability abroad. Funding needed for Amazon Watch and our partner organizations in Ecuador. |
