Project overview | Other Worlds is a project to research thriving economic alternatives to the neoliberal model and to educate the public about them through multiple media. Other Worlds will document and publicize five to eight case studies of parallel economies through a book, traveling photo exhibit, a documentary film, national radio shows, and a series of magazine articles. Each study will highlight one movement or region, and will be partly narrated by and focused on women within it. The studies will highlight how economic integration is impacting the region; how poverty impacts the weakest, especially women and their children; how the alternatives were constructed and how they function; what challenges they face; and what lessons can be drawn for others working for a more just world.
In the hopes of reaching beyond a small set of converts, the work will be popular and accessible. The stories will be told in lively, descriptive, and where possible, visual ways.
In the spirit of the Jubilee South slogan “Nothing about us without us,” the projects will be accountable to the movements they portray. We will rely on a deeply collaborative process, will get clearance for the content from our collaborators, and will make our products available to them to empower their own struggles.
