Project overview | At the “Earth Summit” in Rio in 1992, the United States government agreed to implement Agenda 21 . Yet, more than a decade later, there is no political will or public awareness to marshal such change. Instead, social, economic, and environmental inequities grow larger, a trend reinforced by national political priorities. “Conventional” development has failed the people of Appalachia, prompting this question– whose development are we trying to sustain? Citizens, through their grass roots networks, and some local elected leaders are beginning to call for sustainability and implement their own local programs. The “Citizens Campaign for Leadership on Sustainability” will bring these groups together to learn from one another, to build a voice for community that will collectively call for political accountability and policies that put people before profit. |
